Honored Hero
An “Honored Hero” Shares Her Story to Lift Up Valley Children’s Cancer Patients
Lupe Dominguez has a story to tell – one of hope, survival and gratitude – and she’s sharing it with pediatric cancer patients at Valley Children’s.
An oncology nurse and leukemia survivor herself, Lupe has dedicated her life and career to helping others and sharing her knowledge with patients and their family members. “Any bit of knowledge I can share to help alleviate fear and confusion, and provide resources and a better understanding of the side effects of chemotherapy, I am all in,” she said.
A testament to the impact she has made, Lupe was named an Honored Hero for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS). She also participates in speaking engagements and LLS Latino outreach activities as a patient ambassador. By relaying her first-hand personal experiences with surviving leukemia, she encourages patients at Valley Children’s to stay strong.
“As a valued nurse and brave cancer survivor herself, Lupe offers first-hand knowledge and experience that resonates with our kids and motivates them in a way that goes beyond any clinical knowledge and expertise,” said Valley Children’s Cancer and Blood Disorders Center Medical Director Dr. Vinod Balasa. “She is compassionate in a way that is beyond measure.”
Supporting Patients with the Best People, Technology and Resources
At the forefront of pediatric oncology, Valley Children’s Cancer and Blood Disorders Center offers an extensive range of specialized services for various cancer and blood disorders. The center is equipped with an outpatient unit, treatment rooms, an infusion center and a play area. It also houses Starship Craycroft, a fully-equipped 36-bed inpatient unit designed to provide the best possible care in a child-friendly environment.
Valley Children’s holistic approach is essential to address not just the physical aspects of the disease, but also the emotional, psychological and social needs of the child and their family. Our affiliation with Children’s Oncology Group (COG), a global cooperative research collaborative, empowers us to offer over 90 open protocols for standard treatments, including access to pioneering clinical trials for cutting-edge therapies.
But it’s the people delivering these therapies and services at Valley Children’s that make all the difference, and we’re proud to have Lupe on board, supporting and inspiring patients and their families.
“If you ever want to humble yourself in life, take a moment to watch a child battle cancer,” Lupe said. “It is beyond the bravest thing you will ever see.”
