Recognizing Two Legends in Pediatric Medicine

We are honored to celebrate two extraordinary physicians who have profoundly shaped our institution and positively impacted countless lives. Pediatric Hematologist/Oncologist Dr. Vonda Lee Crouse and Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr. Joseph A. Gerardi exemplify what it means to serve with skill, compassion and dedication.

A Pioneer in Pediatric Oncology and Compassionate Care

Dr. Crouse, who joined Valley Children’s in 1987 and continues to treat children in Valley Children’s Cancer and Blood Disorders Center, was instrumental in founding the Central Valley’s first pediatric oncology program. Her approach revolutionized care, as she focused equally on treating the illness and supporting the whole child and family. Under her leadership, the oncology program has become a center of hope and healing, providing life-saving treatments to thousands of children.

What sets Dr. Crouse apart is her human touch. Known for capturing the smallest details in her patient notes – everything from a child’s pink glasses to their parents’ occupations – she creates a personal connection with each family.

“Her vast experience and expertise have paved the way for others. She is the most humble and loved person by patients, families and staff alike.”

Dr. Vinod Balasa, Medical Director of Valley Children’s Cancer and Blood Disorders Center

In recognition of her unparalleled contribution, Valley Children’s is proud to name its new program the Dr. Vonda Lee Crouse Bone Marrow Transplant and Cell Therapy Program.

Building a World-Class Orthopaedics Program

Affectionately known as “Dr. Joe,” Dr. Gerardi was not only a brilliant pediatric orthopaedic surgeon but also a mentor and role model. His colleagues remember him as a man of extraordinary skill, heart and humility.

“Dr. Joe didn’t just help me learn orthopaedics and learn how to take care of kids and navigate Valley Children’s Hospital. He was a great example of what it was to be a good man, a good father and a good husband.”

Dr. Kerry Loveland, Medical Director of Orthopaedics

Dr. Gerardi’s legacy extends far beyond his individual achievements. Under his leadership, Valley Children’s pediatric orthopaedics program grew to national prominence, recognized year after year in U.S. News and World Report’s “Best Children’s Hospitals” rankings.

“Dr. Joe’s vision and unwavering dedication has elevated Valley Children’s pediatric orthopaedics program into national prominence and set a standard for pediatric care,” said Todd Suntrapak, Valley Children’s Healthcare President and CEO. “This renaming ensures that future generations will know the remarkable contributions of Dr. Joe and be inspired by his legacy of excellence and compassion.”

A Lasting Impact

Dr. Joe’s legacy will continue to guide the orthopaedics program for decades, while Dr. Crouse’s groundbreaking work in pediatric oncology will impact generations of children and families to come. We are proud to honor their work and grateful for the countless lives they have changed.
